Morotai Island districts

Morotai Island (695 miles persegi/1.800 km ²) is the name of an island as well as the new definitive district that is located on the islands of Halmahera, Maluku Islands, Indonesia. As part of the North Maluku province, he is one of the most northerly island in Indonesia.

Morotai was inaugurated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Indonesia, Mardiyanto, on October 29, 2008, as a result of expansion of the North Halmahera regency.

Morotai Island is divided into five districts:
  1. Morotai Jaya
  2. Morotai Selatan
  3. Morotai Selatan Barat
  4. Morotai Timur
  5. Morotai Utara

History


During the 15th century and 16th, Morotai under the powerful influence of the Sultanate of Ternate. Is the core of a large area called the Moro, which include coastal islands of Halmahera and Morotai close to the south.

In the mid-16th century, the island is a place of Portuguese Jesuit mission. Sultanate of Ternate and Halmahera Muslims felt offended will pioneer the spread of religious activity, and tried to prevent missions from the island in 1571, as a result, the Portuguese leave the area. In the 17th century, using the power of Ternate Morotai by repeatedly ordered the inhabitants to move out of the island. At the beginning of the century the inhabitants moved to Dodinga, a small town at a strategic point of the west coast of Halmahera. Then, in 1627 and 1628, Sultan Hamzah of Ternate ordered migration of Christian citizens into Malay, Ternate, to be more easily controlled.

This island became the airfield for the Japanese during World War II. The island was taken over by force the United States in September 1944, and was used as the basis for the Allied attack to the Philippines in early 1945, and to the east of Borneo in May and June of that year. Is the basis for an attack to Java in October 1945 which was abandoned after the Japanese surrender in August.
