Before Colonization

This area is at the beginning was the former area of the four greatest Islamic empire in the east of the archipelago known as the Sultanate Moloku Kie Raha ( Sultanate of Four Mountains in Maluku), namely :

* Sultanate Jailolo
* Sultanate Tidore
* Sultanate of Ternate

Age of Independence

Old Order

In this era, the position and role of North Maluku had been steadily declining, had enjoyed his position as a residency of Ternate between the years 1945 to 1957. Once that position is divided into Level II Regional ( county ).

Efforts to pioneer the formation of the North Maluku province has been started since September 19, 1957. When the transitional parliament issued a decree to form the province of North Maluku to support the struggle for the return of west Irian by Law No. 15 year 1956, but the effort was halted after the appearance of rebellion Permesta events.

In 1963, a number of prominent political parties such Partindo, PSII, NU, the Catholic Party and Parkindo continuing effort ever undertaken by urging the Council of Regional Representatives-Mutual Assistance ( DPRD-GR ) to fight for the establishment of the North Maluku province DPRD-GR responded to this effort by issuing a resolutin Number 4/DPRD-GR/1964 that essentially provide support for efforts to establish a province of North Maluku. But the change in government from the old order to new order resulted in pioneering efforts that have been done is not got concrete follow-up.

New Order

In the New Order, Kie Raha Moloku area is divided into two administrative districts and one city. District capital in Ternate, North Maluku, Central Halmaheraa regency capital in Soa Sio, Tidore, and the City of its capital in Ternate. Third district / city is still including the area of Maluku Province.

Reform Order

In the reign of President Bacharudding JUsuf Habibie, came the thought to do the acceleration of development in some areas with the potential to form new provices. Maluku province, including one potential area that needs to be accelerated development through the expansion of the province, mainly because the rate of development between northern and southern regions and / or between the central and southeast which is not compatible.

On that basis, the government established the North Maluku province ( with a temporary capital in Ternate) which was established by Act No. 46 of 1999 on Expansion of the province of North Maluku. Buru regency and West Southeast Maluku District (State Gazette Year 1999 Number 174, Supplement countries No. 3895).

Thus, this province was officially established on October 12, 1999 as expansion of Maluku Province in the administrative area of North Maluku, Ternate, North Maluku and the District.

Subsequently formed again some new autonomous regions through Law No. 1 year 2003 regarding the establishment of North Halmahera, East Halmahera, South Halmahera, Sula Islands District, and City Tidore.
